Xylem cells form the tubular fibers that transport water to the leaves of a tree. These white Arborvitae xylem fibers are swollen with water from spring rains. If left under the bark, they would dry and harden into a new ring of wood fiber, after being replaced with a new layer of xylem fibers in the cambium layer.
